Memorial “Titanic”

The Titanic Memorial, a 6-meter granite sculpture of a man with arms wide open, adorns the waterfront of the Washington Channel. On a rectangular pedestal, there is a laconic inscription: “To the brave men who died in the Titanic disaster on April 15, 1912. They sacrificed their lives to save women and children.”
According to official figures, 1,513 people died in the crash of the liner: 1,325 men and 109 women. In memory of the male self-sacrifice, members of the women’s section of the Titanic Remembrance Society raised $25,000 and commissioned a monument, which was created by sculptor John Horrigan and architect Henry Bacon, creator of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial was installed in 1931 on New Hampshire Avenue, and 37 years later was moved to its current location.
